My Greatest Fear In Taking The Stage Was Being Black.

In 2015 I was asked to be apart of a business event being hosted at a State University. They wanted me to teach on The Sales Management Process. I was scared. No one on the “panel” of speakers looked like me… and most of the attendees didn’t look like me either.

We all haven’t different reasons why we are scared to do certain things:

  • We are too fat.
  • Not as good looking.
  • Too old.
  • Too young
  • Not educated enough.
  • Not as polished.
  • Not super charismatic.
  • Not as wealthy.

The list goes on and on… here was the item on my FIRST list…

For me at that moment, being in the south… it was a different version of the imposter syndrome — I was afraid of not being respected because I am a black woman. Being a black woman.

That fear was real. It was important for me though, because at first… I wanted to say no. That stage was too big, I didn’t want to put myself out there like that and I didn’t want to fail in front of so many people.

I spoke because I needed to own my knowledge and experience to that point my 10+ years of being in business and running a million dollar company.

It’s so easy for us to judge ourselves before other people judge us. You realize that? I was attempting to make a poor decision about me not being enough. You know why… because I had been rejected before… on other stages.

What made this stage different? I made a decision about my value before anyone else did. I made a decision about who I was an wasn’t before I entertained other peoples perception. I forced my thoughts about me to be the only one that mattered.

In taking the stage and telling your story… this is a big deal. Some people will not like you, for whatever reason… let them go.

The people who like you… no let me correct that love you… will find you … and once you connect you know you’ve struck gold. That. That is the only thing that actually matters.

Once you master this… you can make money with your story… you can make money from the stage. You can create the kind of legacy you want… BUT FIRST… you have to own your own value first.

Yes, I was the highest rated speaker that day… there was no one else in the room that looked like me. Lesson learned. You own you first. Forget what others think.

This is exactly why I started teaching HOW TO MAKE MONEY WITH YOUR STORY…
